Trailhead Coordinates:  36.44988, -118.16410

Land Manager: Inyo National Forest 760-873-2400

Description:

Horseshoe Meadows is simply a delightful place to camp with your horses.

3 campgrounds are located in the Horseshoe Meadow Area.  And each camp site has one corral for stock use, water from a stream, and great trails to ride.

Horseshoe Meadow is a large meadow at an elevation of 10,000 feet, surrounded by pine forests. This area is characterized by rolling terrain and sub-alpine meadows.

Getting to Horseshoe Meadow can be an adventure in itself; The road to Horseshoe Meadow climbs over 6,000 feet, as it winds its way up from the town of Lone Pine. Make sure that your rig is in good shape before you start the trip.

Trails from Horseshoe Meadow provide access to the John Muir and Golden Trout Wilderness Areas, and to Sequoia National Park. Cottonwood Pass, Cottonwood Lakes and Trail Pass Trails provide access to Golden Trout, John Muir and Sequoia National Park Wilderness areas.

This is an active bear area so you must use bear canisters to secure your food and refuse.

The trail is open for hiking and horseback riding. Trails can be rocky, hoof protection is advised. Best to stay on the trail since meadows and water areas can be marshy.

Best Season: Summer, open June-October
