Lake Oroville State Recreational Area, Oroville, CA
Loafer Creek Equestrian Campground
Horse Camp Coordinates: 39.523176, -121.44820
Horse riders have over 40 miles of trails to ride in the Lake Oroville State Recreational area, 70 miles north of Sacramento. Lake Oroville is man-made lake, formed by the tallest earth-filled dam in the country (higher than Hoover dam at 770 feet above the stream bed of the Feather River). Encompassing approximately 28,450 acres near the City of Oroville, the park offers horse camping and an extensive system of horse trails.
The horse camp offers corrals, hitching posts, feeders, fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets, hot showers, a wash rack, and well marked and maintained trails. There are several loops that wind around the lake and make for some beautiful riding. The trails are easy to moderate single track and the wildflowers are beautiful when in season. There is a beautiful 17.5-mile loop trail that starts and ends at the Loafer Creek Equestrian Campgrounds.
During the summer months many trails have good shade from the sun. There are several moderate hills to climb and quite a bit of flat ways. The terrain is mostly clay with roots from trees, with a few rocky areas. You can get down to the water in a couple of places, however swimming with horses is not recommended.
