Wawona Horse Camp, Yosemite National Park

Trailhead Coordinates: 37.548190, -119.676986

The Wawona Horse Camp, located near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park, is located on the south fork of the Merced River and a 45 minute drive from Yosemite Valley. Trails here are beautiful and include one to the Mariposa Grove of Sequoia trees.

Read board at entrance to camp for information on disposing of manure (in bags at dumpster, bring lots of large bags (can’t buy them there), ask maintenance yard just past camp if can use wheelbarrow) Check in/ask at Stables when you arrive for the latest information. Beryl, the ranger who runs wagon rides on other side of river, is very knowledgeable (very interesting to chat with) and helpful. Do not ride through Pioneer History area. Maximum two horses at a time on the covered wooden bridge. Do not ride up on the rent string or pass them without permission of the wranglers. Trails are all relatively wide and well maintained.

General Camp information:

The Wawona campground is open all year. From October to April, the sites are first come, first served.
Reservations for campsites can be obtained from May to September. This campground has 93 sites for tents and RVs, one group site, two horse camps and piped in fresh water. Each site contains a picnic table, bear food locker and a fire grate. There are campsites for RV’s up to 35 feet long. Check the reservation website for details.

There are six multi-stalled facilities with flush toilets. Showers are located in Yosemite Valley at the Curry Village or Housekeeping camp.

The campsite limits are 6 horses per site and two vehicles.  Check out time is 12 - noon.  According to regulations, there are no pets allowed in the horse campsites.
The temperature at night, even in August, can be in the 30's.
