Keep Rolling
with the Right Chain lube
Choosing the Chain Lubricants for your area

From motor oil to Teflon the chain lubricant
you use will dramatically affect the life of
your chain. Different conditions call for
different lubrication types and systems.
NOTE: Do not use WD-40 on your chain. WD-40
will help keep your chain from rusting but
it will not protect it from wearing.
Wet and Muddy Conditions
If you're riding in wet and muddy conditions
a wet lubricant will serve you well. Wet
lubes simply resist the abuse of mud much
better than dry lubes.
Wet lubes are the more traditional of the
chain lubes. They go on wet and they stay
wet. Wet lubes provide excellent lubrication
and chain protection in clean conditions and
also protect against moisture extremely
well.
Many people use plain motor oil with great
results. More high-tech (and expensive)
versions of wet lubes use synthetic oils,
teflon, and other ingredients.
Wet lubes begin to fail in dusty conditions.
The wet surface acts as a magnet to dust and
can quickly clog your drive train with thick
oily mud. If you find yourself riding on a
dusty trail, you’ll need to clean your chain
more often.
Dry and Dusty Conditions
For dry dusty conditions use a dry
lubricant. Dry lubes contain wax of some
sort and are applied with an evaporating
solvent dries after being applied to the
chain.
