Natural Good Weather Indicators

Good weather can make or break a backcountry outing. Despite assurances from the weatherman it's a good idea to keep a "weather eye" open.

These tips will help you predict the day's weather.

Red Sky at night hikers delight. Beautiful sunsets mean you're all clear to sleep under stars. Beautiful sunsets are an indicator of rain. in order to see red clouds in the evening, sunlight must have a clear path from the west in order to illuminate moisture-bearing clouds moving off to the east.

Morning Dew. Dew on the ground may make for wet feet early in the day but it's indicative of fair weather. The favorable weather elements for dew include clear skies and light wind.

Birds flying high in the sky. The bugs that the birds are after only come out if the weather is clear.
