Advice, Tricks, and Tips to

Keep Your Outdoor Adventures Safe and Enjoyable!

Items to keep in your Saddlebags

Whenever I'm on the trail I carry the flowing items in my saddlebags.

I'm not trying to weigh down the horse but rather ensure that both he and I make it back, to ride another day. The combined weight of everything in this list is under 12 pounds.

What pack in Saddle Bags

While the list may look a bit thick, I can fit all of these items easily in my bags and have plenty of room to spare for lunch.

  • Emergency Kit - Contents List HERE

  • Map

  • Compass

  • Rain Gear  - These usually get tied behind the cantle

  • Snacks - Hard candy and or granola bars

  • Pocket knife

  • First Aid Items - bandage, antibiotic ointment, aspirin

  • Flashlight

  • Cell Phone (for emergencies) - Make sure you've ICED it!

  • Water Bottles

  • Bandanna

  • Hoof pick

  • Insect Repellent  - I like the individual towelettes

  • Baling Twine - Almost as good as duck tape

  • Easy boot

  • Garbage Bag - List of Uses HERE

  • Camera

  • GPS

  • Spare batteries

I'll also carry other items depending upon the length of time and the distance I plan on covering.

LT with english and saddlebags

If I'm using a western rig I'll typically put these items into pommel bags so the weight is over the withers instead of his kidneys.
