What’s in a name – Knot
Definitions
Bend
-
A bend knot is a knot used to join together two
lengths of rope. The ropes “bend” ‘round one
another so to speak. Examples of Bends: are:

Hitch
- A
type of knot used for binding, or connecting a
rope to a part of a ship or other object.
Examples of Hitches:
Blake's Hitch
Stopper
- A
knot that prevents a rope from passing back
through a hole by making the rope bulky. A back
up knot used so that the main knot does not
unravel. Examples of stopper knots are:
Overhand

Bitter End
- The end of the rope that’s in your hand. The
loose in of the rope.
Standing End
- The rope end that is under strain or
otherwise connected to an object.
Knot
- What happens when you tie a rope to itself.
Loops (Fixed) - A circle of rope that does
not close under strain. Examples of Fixed Loops:
