An Easy Way to Break in a New Pair of Boots

Love new boots but dread breaking them in and the accompanying hot spots and blisters? Us too!

Try this method and you'll be a believer.

  1. Fill your new boots with warm water. Warm not hot water, you don't want to cook your new boots you just want to soften the leather.

  2. Let the warm water soak for a few minutes then put them on and go hiking. Make sure you wear socks of the same thickness as you you normally use for hiking.

  3. Hike till the boots dry out. This takes a couple of hours.

This warm and wet trick beats the traditional method of breaking in by wearing the new boots for an hour or so a day till they fit well. When I've gone with my warm water soaking I've been able to go on extended trips with new boots much sooner than I would have been able to do otherwise.

NOTE: This method works best for full leather boots. Synthetic boots don't absorb water and so this doesn't help for them.
