An Easy Way to Break in a New
Pair of Boots
Love new boots but dread
breaking them in and the accompanying hot spots
and blisters? Us too! Try this
method and you'll be a believer.
-
Fill your new boots with
warm water. Warm not hot water, you don't
want to cook your new boots you just want to
soften the leather.
-
Let the warm water soak for
a few minutes then put them on and go
hiking. Make sure you wear socks of the same
thickness as you you normally use for
hiking.
-
Hike till the boots dry out.
This takes a couple of hours.
This warm and wet trick beats the
traditional method of breaking in by wearing the
new boots for an hour or so a day till they fit
well. When I've gone with my warm water soaking
I've been able to go on extended trips with new
boots much sooner than I would have been able to
do otherwise.
NOTE: This method works best for
full leather boots. Synthetic boots don't absorb
water and so this doesn't help for them.
