Bogue Chitto State Park

Lat / LONG:  30.76045, -90.1501

Franklinton, LA 70438

For those wanting to ride the Bayou, the 1,786-acre Bogue Chitto State Park site includes a diversity of natural landscapes including small streams, rivers, cypress tupelo swamps, a hardwood forest, upland forests and a rolling landscape.

The physical environment here is highly diverse - being comprised of pine uplands, rolling hills, rugged bluffs culminating in a gorge area and both upland and bottomland hardwoods west of the Bogue Chitto River. Clear small streams crisscross  the area.

Fourteen miles of equestrian trails wind through some of the most interesting topography of southern Louisiana, with the trailhead located near Fricke's Cave. (Frickes Cave, which -- despite its name -- resembles more of a gorge, possesses delicate sandstone spires created when water erodes the surface underneath pebbles. The pebbles remain perched atop the spires, while over time water splashes on the sandstone surface, forming the two-foot tall fingers of sandstone that shoot up from the now-lowered surface. NOTE: You won’t be riding in Frickes Cave as the formations are too delicate to allow visitors to walk amongst them.)

·         Gorge Run Trail, the longest trail within the park, forms a loop which can be accessed from various points along the main state park road. A segment of the trail from the trailhead near the park entrance descends into a 90 foot deep portion of the gorge known locally as Fricke’s Cave.

·         Otter Oasis Trail winds through dense bottonland hardwoods in the northern part of the park.

·         Discover Nature Trail is accessible from near the Bottomland RV area, which is just to the south of the beach section of the Bogue Chitto River.
