Visitors to the Winn Ranger District can enjoy camping at Gum Springs Campground, horseback riding on the Gum Springs Horse Trail, exploring the mysteries of Saline Bayou, hunting in the Catahoula National Wildlife Management Preserve, camping and picnicking at Cloud Crossing, or hiking on the Dogwood Interpretive Trail. Wildlife and botanic enthusiasts have seemingly unlimited areas to explore including a number of native prairies.
The Gum Springs Equestrian Trail is located approximately 8 miles west of Winnfield, La. on Hwy. 84. The Gum Springs Equestrian Camp is a very popular destination riders across the south. In addition to being a great forest ride and the trail is also wide enough to accommodate wagons. The Gum Springs Horse Camp offers the excitement of horseback riding and camping in a beautiful upland pine setting. Camping facilities are available for recreation vehicles, trailers, and tents. A toilet is also available.
Sections of both trails pass through Keiffer Prairie where native grasses and cedar trees are predominate. You will also enjoy the piney woods and hardwood bottoms.
The Blue Loop (blazed with blue diamonds) is approximately 5.6 miles in length. This trail crosses over two bridges. Water is available year-round at the 1-acre Bombing Range Pond and elsewhere along the trail depending on current rainfall.
The Yellow Loop (blazed with yellow diamonds) is approximately 18 miles in length. This loop follows the Blue Loop for about 2.5 miles. These sections will be blazed with both blue and yellow diamonds. The Yellow Loop Trail passes between the Mose Blake ponds and has water intermittently along the rest of the trail.
