Acadia National Park

Bar Harbor, Maine

Trailhead Coordinates: 44.31482, -68.23707

An island, near Bar Harbor, off the Maine Coast is home to Acadia National Park as well as superlative fall colors.

Riders and cart, carriage, and buggy drivers at Acadia have access to nearly 45 miles of stone carriage roads that meander and weave throughout the mountains and valleys of the park. Equestrian usage is limited to the carriage roads, but even the most diehard backcountry rider will appreciate the vivid colors, the stone bridges, and the views at Acadia.

When you first arrive at Acadia you’ll find rental box stalls at Wildwood Stables in the park, as well as a small horse camp. Should the camping area at Wildwood be full, as it often is, you’ll need to camp away from your horses at one of the park’s other campgrounds.

After you’ve settled in you’ll have numerous miles of carriage roads to choose from for your fall color exploration. The rugged coastline of Maine offers wonderful views and sights along all of the routes. However, here are a couple of the most popular.

Directly south of the stables is Day Mountain. A 6 mile round trip will have you completing a circle around the base of the mountain as well as summiting. The draw for this ride are the views over the forest and across the waters of the Bay of Fundy to Nova Scotia to the east. The reds and golds of the deciduous trees contrasting with the dark green evergreens form a beautiful counterpoint to the sparkling blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

For fans of the park’s stone bridges the Jordan Pond Amphitheatre loop will have you and your horse crossing several of the 17 stone bridges in the park. These magnificent structures date to the early 1900’s and like the carriage roads themselves were a gift of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr.

One last note about the park; while fall is certainly one of the premier seasons to ride at Acadia you really can’t go wrong with a visit during spring or summer either.
