Lake Tahoe State Park, Spooner Summit North Trailhead
Nevada State Parks
Beautiful
mountain vistas, stunning aerial views of Lake Tahoe, abundant
wildflowers and over 50 miles of trails and dirt roads make the 13,000
acre backcountry a favorite destination for hikers, bikers, and
horseback riders.
Two of the more popular trails in this area are
the Flume Trail above Sand Harbor and the Tahoe Rim Trail along the
crest of the Carson Range.
Trailhead Horse Parking: There is no parking available for horse trailers in the established Spooner North trailhead for hikers. Horse rides should use the dirt parking area 1/4 mile east (toward Carson City) next to the NDOT sand shed (park in the dirt turn out, under the tree).
This is a fee area: Nevada State Parks has instituted a $2.00 per horse/rider pair parking/entrance fee. Envelopes and pay tube at the trailhead.
Trail Difficulty: Easy to High Moderate: some wildly exposed sections. Trails here are mostly sandy, with excellent footing. You will find some larger rocks that horses have to negotiate and tight rock areas to ride through.
Some of the best times to ride this area are late October, with fall colors at their peak, and mountain bikes a bit less, or in July when the wildflowers cover entire hillsides.
Horse Camping: Limited backcountry camping is available. The best area horse camping is near Twin Lakes which has grazing and sporadic water. Water is at a minimum on these trails.
