Canebrake Horse Camp - Uwharrie National Forest – Asheboro, North Carolina
Canebrake Horse camp is a newer campground located in the Badin Lake area of the Uwharrie National Forest. 32 miles of horse trails and a full range of amenities are available for horse campers.
The camps main attraction is the area's 25 riding trails, which can be accessed from the camp via the Home Trail. This impressive collection of single-track trails meanders through about 4,000 acres of oak-hickory and oak-pine forests. Climbing hills and crossing streams, trail riders can witch and listen for a variety of wildlife ranging from songbirds to deer, wild turkey as they ride through the woods. Geologic features of interest include enormous boulders, some as large as 15' tall.
Trails here have something to offer every level of rider. The 3-mile River Trail, rated "more difficult", follows the Uwharrie River. On the other end of the spectrum is the "easy", 1.3 mile long Robbins Trail which crosses the backbone of a scenic ridge of the Uwharrie Mountains and accesses the Deepwater Trail area.
Located on Forest Road 544, Canebrake Horse Camp has 29 sites, each with a parking spur for trailers, table, grill, lantern post, and hitching post. Two vehicles are allowed per site. The campground has potable water spigots located throughout the camp, as are showers and toilets. There is a sewage dump station and horse washing rack centrally located. A campground host is available help and information. Open year-round. Reservations are recommended.
The Equestrian Trail System can be accessed from Canebrake using the Home Trail, which skirts the campground. There are 32 miles of horse trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to more difficult.
Canebrake Horse Camp Fees : Single Sites $12.00 per night - Double Sites $24.00 per night
$5.00 per rider per day, for trail use
