 Sam Brown Horse Camp

Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest

Merlin, OR

Facilities

There are seven campsites for 2-4 horses. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There is a vault toilet and potable water pump. In addition, the adjacent Sam Brown Campground offers two large group shelters with barbecues, amphitheater, and solar showers.

Fees

$5 per campsite per night. Reservations are not required.

Description

This is an older camp, but has new corrals thanks to the Back Country Horsemen from Cave Junction. The camp is right on the banks of Briggs Creek. There are several trails in the area - Briggs Creek Trail (#1132), Dutchy Creek Trail (#1146), Taylor Creek Trail (#1142), Onion Way Trail (#1281) and Secret Way Trail (#1282). For the more adventuresome you can ride all the way to the Illinois River over a series of trails. (Many of these trails are also open to motorcycles during part of the year.)

Directions

Approximately 4 miles north of Grants Pass on I-5, take the Merlin exit 61 and drive west on the Merlin-Galice Highway for 12 miles to FS Rd 25. Turn left and drive 14 miles to Sam Brown Campground. (All paved, but steep and narrow.)
