Filson Tin Chaps

After a potentially miserable, wet and cold, outing where a good friend loaned me a spare pair of the legendary “Tin Chaps” I was a believer. Now I won't be caught without them.

While we don't call these chaps "waterproof" (and neither does Filson) they are the closest you're going to get in a garment that will also protect you from brush, briars, and thorns. We've stayed dry and warm through all day steady rain and sleet with no problem with our Tin Chaps.

At TrailMeister we've used Filson's Single Tin Chaps and the Double Tin Chaps.

The Singles are made of a single thickness of material throughout and do not have lower leg zippers.

The Doubles have a double layer of material from the bottom to almost the knee and they have bottom zippers that make on and off easier.

The Double Tin Chaps get the most use because the zippers make sliding over riding boots and spurs easier. The double layer of material is overkill for how we use them. However, if you were walking through heavy brush we're sure that you would be very appreciative.

Tin Chap Details:

These chaps are constructed of a heavy canvas material (12.5 oz cotton duck) that is saturated with a waxy paraffin type substance.

The heavy canvas material is extraordinarily resilient and is perfect for repelling branches, horns, and briars.

A waxy paraffin is used to saturate the canvas to provide excellent water repellency.

 FILSON CHAPS TIP:

For horseback use get the “Husky” size. The larger sizing makes sliding them over riding boots and spurs much easier.
