Francis
Marion National Forest
The Francis Marion National Forest is a lush landscape of pine stands and wildlife-filled swamps and marshes shaded by towering bald cypress trees. While this may not seem like prime horse riding, the Francis Marion National Forest does offer approximately 33 miles of equestrian friendly trails in two easy to ride loops within its 259,000 acres.
Both trails wind through flat areas of longleaf pine and hardwood forest.
Trails are open year ‘round but the most popular times are fall, winter, and spring, to avoid the worst of summer’s heat and insects. The climate is hot and humid in the summer and is generally mild in the winter.
Jericho Horse Trail
The 19-mile loop trail traverses a wide array of habitat types, from mature longleaf pine stands to bottomland hardwood drains, and offers captivating scenery to visitors.
Because this area is near the coast, parts of the trail are prone to flooding.
Directions: From Exit 208 on I-26, drive on SC Hwy. 52 to Moncks Corner. From Moncks Corner, drive east on SC 402 to SC 41. Turn left and drive 7 miles to the trailhead on the left.
Primarily DAY USE: Primitive camping is available with a permit from the District office.
