Description: One the more popular areas in the sandhills region of South Carolina’s midlands, Manchester State Forest has about 20 miles of riding opportunities in three main loop trails, (The Manchester Horse trail - 7.7 miles; Governor’s Ride trail - 7.3 miles; and Red Horse trails - 4 miles) and their connectors.
Formally
plantation country today the Manchester State Forest is managed for
timber (pine and oak)
and for recreational purposes
including Equestrian, hiking and biking uses.
Manchester State Forest proper has no camping available but in the adjacent Poinsett State Park and Mill Creek County Park’s you’ll find both primitive and full service overnight camping.
From parking area on Poinsett Road, Center Trail Road, and Mill Creek County Park, you’ll ride through rolling sand hills, open fields, and cross a few country roads as you pass through stands of massive oak, red cedars festooned with lacy Spanish moss, and longleaf pines.
Attentive riders may spot some the region’s wildlife which includes; Red fox, deer, and wild turkey.
Year round riding is possible here with restrictions during hunting season in the fall. Spring is a popular time to visit as the dogwood, magnolia, and azalea will be blooming. Summer riding may require the use of insect repellents.
The sandy terrain here makes the use of shoes on your mounts unnecessary.
Fees are required to ride here: Individual daily permits are $5.00 and annual permits are $25.00.
Directions: From Columbia drive east, or Sumter drive west to a junction with SC 261. Turn south on SC 261 and follow for 10 miles to Poinsett Park Road (Sumter County S-43-63). Turn right and look for the trailhead on the left.
