South Carolina Trails Main

Sand Hills State Forest is home to Sugar Loaf Mountain, a traditional gathering place and family recreational area.

Known locally as "The Mountain", Sugar Loaf is an unusual geological phenomenon towering a hundred feet above the surrounding terrain.  4 very popular horse trails combine with this unique geological formation to make Sugar Loaf one of the most popular equestrian recreation areas in the sand hills region.

All trails offer easy riding through rolling sand hills and trails of red clay with patches of white sand. The forest here is a mix of new and old growth dogwoods, pine, and hardwoods. Occasional creeks along the trails provide ample water.

All of the trails offer good riding with the Pine Barons Wagon trail being unique in that it is devoted to horse drawn wagons and buggies.

Although there are only four main trails they interconnect often, making numerous shorter loop rides possible.

H. Cooper Black Jr. Horse (18.0 miles)  - Pine Barons Horse (27.0 miles) - Pine Barons Wagon (27.0 miles)  -  Sugarloaf Horse (20.0 miles)

You will need a permit for Horseback Riding on Sand Hills State Forest. These permits can be obtained from the Sand Hills State Forest Headquarters. Cost per permit: Individual Permit: Daily - $5.00Annual - $25.00

Horse camping is available at the SugarLoaf camping area off of Gas Line Road.

Horses do not have to be shod. During warm months, insect repellant is recommended.
