Renovated and re-opened in June, 2010, Whetstone Horse Camp is located on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest corner of South Carolina in Sumter National Forest. The horse Camp serves as a popular base camp for the Rocky Gap and Willis Knob trails that cross between South Carolina and Georgia. These two trails include over 28 miles of trail, river crossings, hills, lots of wildlife, and much more. These many features make Whetstone a great destination point for riders throughout Georgia and the Carolinas. Come ride the “land beside the waters” in Ocanee Country, SC.
Whetstone Horse Camp Highlights:
The Campground proper is well equipped and has 20+ camping spots available for reservation and a sizable day use parking area for horse riders.
The 13 mile long Rocky Gap trail is composed of several loops located entirely on the South Carolina side of the river. On this trail you’ll find broad vistas offering views of farmland, and of course, the Chattooga River. As you travel along the trail you’ll find rhododendrons, iris, and daisies, as well as have chances to peek at ginseng, cornflower, and more as you wander. The other main trail is the Willis Knob Horse Trail which is accessed via the Adline Branch, Big Island, and Moss Mill river fords (FYI - Adline Branch is the widest and shallowest of the three fords.). Willis Knob Trail is one continuous loop of 15 miles on the Georgia side of the Chattooga and travel over similar terrain to that of Rocky Gap. Regardless of which trail and state you choose to ride, from the Whetstone Horse Camp you’ll pass by long abandoned house foundations that now serve as resting areas for deer and wild turkey.
Additional Trail Info:
As river crossings can be potentially hazardous affairs, watch the weather, be aware of high water, and check with the Andrew Pickens Ranger District office for detailed river crossing information. The ranger office can also provide camping fee information if you’re overnight camping.
