Day Use Only - No Horse Camping
Monahans Sandhills State Park consists of 3840 acres of sand dunes, some up to 70 feet high, about a half-hour's drive west of Odessa.
For equestrian usage this park has an 800-acre equestrian area. There
are no marked trails here so it’s a good place for cross country travel.
A trailer parking area is provided and has a fenced corral where riders
can tie and water their horses. Potable water is available in the area.
The general terrain is heavy sand, with brush and a few mesquite trees.
The park is only a small portion of a dune field that extends about 200 miles from south of Monahans westward and north into New Mexico. Most of these dunes are stabilized by vegetation, but the park is one area where many dunes are still active. Active dunes grow and change shape in response to seasonal, prevailing winds, so you’ll experience a dynamic landscape.
