If riding through an area rich in historical significance is your idea of a good time, the Manassas Battlefield is a great place for you.  You’ll retrace the hoof beats of the Union and Confederate armies, ride past Henry Hill where General Jackson earned his famous moniker “Stonewall“ in the first Manassas battle of 1861, and ride the battleground where General Robert E. Lee fought to victory during the second Manassas battle in 1862.

Riding opportunities at the battlefield encompass a little over 20 miles of trails in four main loops as well as access to the Bull Run area to the south east. To experience Manassas by horse requires a park pass that can be acquired at the main visitor center, along with a copy of the bridle trails map,  prior to making your way to one of the two convenient horse trailer parking areas that further aid equestrian exploration of the area.

Four main loop trails with distances ranging from three to ten miles include the Main Loop, Brawner Farm, Portici, and the Mathews Hill. As might be expected the trails here are kept up nicely and feature yellow trail markers on all horse and mule friendly trails. Stay on the designated bridle paths to avoid a ticket from the park rangers, and to prevent a tumble in the many trenches from ongoing archeological digs that are scattered throughout the park. Trail footing on all trails is generally solid with only a few rocky areas to contend with. Trails in the park also offer mild inclines and a few stream crossings making them suitable for most riders.

The Main Loop trail is the longest at ten miles and covers the entire park area. However, since the park is cut by roads into four main quadrants you will have several street crossings to contend with.  The Main Loop does reward your efforts by passing by most of the park’s significant areas including Chinn Ridge and Henry’s Hill.

To avoid road crossings you can also ride the 8 mile Brawner Farm Loop from the Groveton parking area on the western end of the park, or the 3 mile Portici Loop from the Vander Lane parking area on the southeastern section of the park.

The Battlefield Equestrian Society is the local volunteer organization that helps the park service in maintaining these trails for equestrian usage. Their efforts have in large measure kept these trails open and have allowed horse, and mule, riders to retrace historical hoof steps from the Civil War.
