Conveniently located
just 5 miles from Olympia, Capitol State
Forest is a popular place for a variety of
recreation opportunities. Campers, hikers,
horseback riders, mountain bikes, and
off-road vehicle (ORV) riders all make use
of Capitol Forest’s extensive trail systems.
To
prevent conflicts between user groups areas
have been allocated for specific activities.
Motorized recreation, such as ORVs, is
allowed on the northern half of the park,
and horseback riding is limited to the
south. Mountain bikers and hikers use both
halves of the forest, with some trails
limited to hikers only.
The Margaret McKinney
Campground is located near the Waddell Creek
entrance and handily offers access to
Waddell Creek itself.

With 25 camp spots
with designated
areas for horse camping, potable water and
several restrooms Margaret McKinney is a
wonderful place to spend a weekend or a day.
Equestrian use is limited to the drier
months before May 1st and
November 30th to prevent forest
streams and soils.
