Named
for
for James and Eliza Gallaher, two
Pennsylvania natives who moved to Roslyn
in the late 1800's and staked
mining claims in the mountains of the Teanaway, Gallaher Head Lake and Gallaher
Head Trail offer outstanding views and high
country exploration opportunities.
The
Gallaher Head Lake Loop starts and ends at
the De Roux Horseman's camp along the North
Fork of the Teanaway River about 30 miles
from Cle Elum, WA.
The route starts at
the north end of the De Roux Horseman's camp
and follows Boulder De Roux Trail #1392 for
about four miles to Gallaher Head Lake. A
sturdy hikers bridge crosses the Teanaway
about 1/4 mile from camp and a reasonable
horse ford is nearby as well.
At approximately 1.1
miles from the trailhead the trail forks
with De Roux Spur heading left to Koppen
Mountain.
Past the trail
junction, the forest opens and a waterfall
can be seen in the gorge below. Above the
waterfall you'll cross the creek and enter a
broad meadow with De Roux Peak
viewable to the southwest. From the meadow
the trail climbs, through several
switchbacks, to Gallagher Head Lake.
From Gallaher Head
Lake follow a stretch of 4X4 road for one
mile until you reach the well signed
intersection of the Esmeralda Basin
Trail #1394. The trail starts very steeply
and the grade becomes more moderate through
a series of switchbacks leading to the pass.
Just
below the pass you'll come to the Ann Lake
trail intersection as you head down into
Esmeralda Basin. after the Ann Lake
intersection another series of switchbacks
will start your descent into the basin in
earnest.
On the way down pass
the Ingalls Way trail #1390 and arrive at
the Esmeralda Basin trailhead. A well used
side trail parallels forest service road
9737 back to the De Roux trailhead.
