The trail climbs steeply
through a second growth forest regenerated
from clear-cutting in the 1920’s. Heybrook
Lookout Trail is an excellent early season
hike because its low elevation (1,700 feet)
makes it one of the first trails near the
Seattle / Monroe / Everett area to become
snow-free. The observation deck of the
lookout is open to the public, and offers an
outstanding, close-up view of Mount Persis,
Mount Index, and Philadelphia Mountain, and
other distant peaks to the east.
Starting from the trailhead
on highway 2 at an elevation of 800 feet
you'll start climbing immediately and finish
at the top of the ridge with an elevation
gain of 900 feet.

Getting There: Drive US
Highway 2 to the boundary of Mt.
Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest at milepost
37.5, just east of the town of Index
turnoff. Parking for the trailhead is
located across from the boundary sign, on
the north side of the highway.
A Northwest Forest Pass is
required for each vehicle parked at the
trailhead.
