Washington Trails Main

An overnight, or day trip, to Waptus Lake is a wonderful way to see parts of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area. From the Salmon La Sac Trailhead the way to Waptus Lake is easy, just follow the Waptus Lake Trail #1310 for 10 miles to Waptus lake through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

The Salmon La Sac trailhead has ample parking multiple vault toilets and a wilderness check in station.

The trails here while very well marked are also very rocky; some type of hoof protection is advised.

Along the route to Waptus Lake you'll encounter a burned area with many snags looming overhead, a rushing canyon where the river is squeezed into a narrow chute and fantastic rock formations. Once at Waptus Lake you'll be treated to magnificent views of the Dutch Miller Gap flanked by Bear's Breast mountain to the north and Summit Chief Mountain to the south.

There is little to no grazing available for stock use on this route so be sure to bring along certified weed free feed for your horses or mules on this trip. Remember to keep stock and pack animals at least 200 feet from the lake.

A forest pass is required for this area. Certified weed free feed is required for stock use.
