A
favorite, east of the Cascades, area for
many Washington state horse riders and
hikers, Wenas offers a multitude of active
and abandoned logging roads, and a few
trails, from which to
start your cross country adventures. A large
primitive horse camp provides plenty of room
for equestrian groups. Indeed, the Wenas
Barbeque Flats campground is a popular
destination for horse groups from across the
state.

Numerous trails and logging roads start from
the BBQ flats campground and wind through conifer forests
and into shrub steppe areas, interspersed
with stream corridors. Vegetation varies
with sage, bunch grasses, and ponderosa pine
predominating. Many hillsides offer open
grasslands interspersed with rock
outcroppings.

Wildlife is diverse, including elk, deer,
bighorn sheep, sage grouse, turkey, quail,
and a myriad of small mammals, upland birds,
raptors, and reptiles. There are numerous
perennial streams that are said to have
stocks of resident trout.

Sights to see include several old line
shacks and cabins that were used long ago.
Of course valley and mountain vistas abound.

The
terrain here is a series of canyons and
ranges from flat to steep rolling slopes and
is predominately rocky so do use some sort
hoof protection.
