Stay Found with TrailMeister
Learn how to Stay Found at one of our Map and Compass seminars given for horse and mule riders from a trail riding equestrians' point of view. We travel the
country helping our fellow horse and mule riders learn to use the map and compass stashed in the bottom of their saddle bags.
Ride confident with the knowledge you'll need to safely tackle the trail.
What you’ll learn in our acclaimed 4 hour basic knowledge seminar:
- Interpretation of topographic maps; helping the trail rider visualize the terrain
and potential trail obstacles while planning a ride. We’ll talk about the different types of maps but spend most of the time on interpreting contour lines.
- Declination and why failure to adjust for it can cause you to see a lot of unexpected country.
- Compasses: How and why they lie.
- Taking and shooting azimuths – Lots and lots of what direction is that?
- Finding where you are on a map and determining how to get where you want to be – Triangulation with a touch of resection thrown in for good measure.
Come and learn to Stay Found at an upcoming TrailMeister land navigation seminar.
For Highlighted Events it is Highly Recommended that you Pre-Register.

The only thing that participants need to bring is an open mind and maybe a compass if they have one. For folks that don’t have a compass and want to get one we recommend the
Brunton Classic model. It’s cheap and does the job. You'll like the cheap part if you have a tendency to lose things.
