Shimek State Forest

 

The Lick Creek Unit of Shimek State forest has 25 miles of horse and mule trails as well as equestrian campgrounds, one with 11 sites and the other with 24 sites.

What to Expect

  • The equestrian campgrounds have 35 sites available to horse and mule riders
  • Facilities include hitching rails, pit toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, gravel parking pads, a water hydrant, and shade.
  • There are stalls for overnight stabling.
  • 25 miles of horse and mule friendly trails

Rules and Regulations

  • Land Manager = Iowa Department of Natural Resources
  • Out of state riders must have a current Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health certificate) and negative Coggin's test (EIA) paperwork with them.
