Half Hitch A camp staple for securing anything that needs to stay in one place, the half hitch along with the bowline, power cinch, and prusik loop are regulars in any camp that I set up. I use two half hitches to secure highlines when I make camp with stock animals.
Run the working end of the rope around what you want to secure to. Loop the end around the standing part of the line and then run it under itself.
For a much more secure knot make two half hitches by taking the working end over the standing line and back down through the resulting loop.
Create a quick release knot by running loop formed from a bight of the working end through the final loop. A quick tug will cause the knot to fall away.
Safety:Ropes and the knots associated with rope, can be dangerous. If improperly handled, or tied, ropes can kill and you could be the victim! Always use rope with care and inspect and test any knots you tie. Respect ropes subject to a heavy load, especially your own climbing rope. The danger associated with ropes under load is often learned by painful experience. .
