Near Index,
Washington, and less than an hour from
Seattle Lake Serene is a must visit is you
like terrific mountain views, mountain top
lakes, and waterfalls.
The trail to the
top is steep and busy, the large parking
area at the trailhead is there for a reason.
At the trailhead
walk
past the gate and onto an abandoned roadbed.
Follow it through a low elevation forest of
alders, birch and pines. You'll intersect an
old jeep trail on the left. Soon after the
old road bed will end at a clearing.
(There's supposed to be a side-trip to the
old Honeymoon Mine from this point. Go
right, into a clearing and a narrow path
leads to the mine. Be careful if you find
it!)
A the clearing,
the trail heads off to the left and down.
Soon, you will
come to a junction. The right fork takes you
to series of switchbacks and up some stairs
to Bridal Veil Falls, a gigantic, billowing
waterfall
plunging over huge granite cliffs.
From its left fork, the trail
dips down to a long bridge over the stream
coming from Lower Bridal Veil Falls. Shortly
afterwards the trail switchbacks up and up
and up, in old-growth forest. There are
great views to the Skykomish Valley and
Monte Cristo area peaks along the
way.
The trail climbs very steeply up stairs and
many more switchbacks until flattening out
on rock filled cribbing, with views down to
the woods where you came from. The trail
goes over a small hill to beautiful
Lake
Serene.
Ice bobs in the lake deep into the summer
and snow and ice cling to the sides of Mount
Index which towers 2,000 feet above the
lake.
