This ride goes from Blackhawk to Santaquin Meadows, Calkens Hollow to Lizard Lake and back. You can also access this trail from Pete Winward trailhead lower in the canyon, or from Jones Ranch in mid-canyon. Payson canyon has several trail heads throughout the canyon, and dispersed (ie. free, unofficial) camping areas, in addition to the Blackhawk horse campground. Most of these camping areas do not have water, so bring it for both your horses and you. You can usually find water on the rides. Riding is really nice here from whenever it opens up in the spring (around Memorial day, usually), until we get snowed out in the winter (mid-late Oct, or sometimes Nov). My favorite time is from mid-June through July 4, when the mules ear flowers are in bloom they are concentrated between Blackhawk and Loafer Mountain trailhead), or in fall when the maples and aspens are on (early-mid Sept).
