Caballo Lake is one of several lakes created by damming the Rio Grande River. The area is high desert with lots of desert brush and some prickly pear cactus. The horse facilities rival many private ranches with large covered corrals and available tack/feed rooms. Unfortunately the riding from the horse corrals is limited. Fortunately the view to the east is stunning mountains.

We rode a 5-6 mile loop that followed a pipeline road near an urban area north, then went east to the lake. When we were there the lake was low (late October) which provided the ability for some long gentle canters. Trails are not marked and there is a maze of arroyos and cattle trails to explore through the mesquite and creosote brush. Footing ranges from sandy to fist size boulders in arroyos and in some places near the lake. Lots of birds: crane, herons, egrets, birds of prey. We met dogs and motorcycle near the lake, but seems very lightly used.
There is a lot of BLM land near and adjacent to the park providing other opportunities for exploring and riding.
